MCCA stands for the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association.
In Michigan, your auto insurance requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP) which will pay for all necessary medical expenses with no maximum limits. However, once the medical expenses reach a certain limit the MCCA fund will reimburse insurance companies for the excess amount. For the period beginning July 1, 2019 the limit that auto insurance companies had to pay was $580,000 and anything in excess of it was paid by the MCCA. Currently the cost per vehicle per year is $220, but it will go down to $100, per vehicle per year for PIP elections of "unlimited" starting July 1st with the auto reform (see our “FAQ – No-Fault Auto Reform” post for more detailed information). For PIP elections less than "unlimited" the MCCA fee will go to $0 per vehicle per year. So, as you can see, even though the MCCA fee is part of your insurance premium, it actually doesn’t go to the insurance companies because it goes towards the MCCA fund. |
What is the MACP Fee?
MACP stands for the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan.
It is a is a program established by the State of Michigan in 1973 to provide access to Michigan no-fault benefits for people injured in a car or truck accident when no applicable car insurance is available.
Starting July 1st, 2020 the MACP has lowered their claim limit to $250,000 from Unlimited previously.
Who is Eligible?
Applications for personal injury protection benefits may be made by a person because of accidental bodily injury arising out of the ownership, operation, maintenance, or use of a motor vehicle as a motor vehicle. Applications for benefits may also be made if the injured person was a driver or passenger of a motorcycle, if the accident involved an uninsured motor vehicle (not another motorcycle).
